Each quarter, GreenStar selects three local not-for-profits to be the recipients of our Bring Your Own Bag, Use It for Good program donations. Our BYOB program encourages shoppers to bring their own bags by providing them with a token worth 5¢ that they can donate to one of the chosen organizations. At the end of the quarter, we make a donation to the groups based on the number of tokens given by our customers. This quarter, our recipients are the Finger Lakes Toy Library, Sustainable Tompkins, and the Learning Farm.

Since 2004, Sustainable Tompkins has been a leader in laying the groundwork for the transition to a resilient local economy, healthy environment, and strong social fabric. They act as convener, connector, and catalyst to engage both the grassroots and policymakers in the work of redesigning how we work and live so that our community can successfully cope with global influences such as climate disruption and energy transitions.

The Sustainable Tompkins Neighborhood MiniGrant program has been successfully maintained since 2008 with almost $71,000 in seed money invested into 182 wonderful grassroots projects. Grants are for small, relatively simple projects that in some way support or “seed” greater equity, self-sufficiency, and lasting social, economic and environmental health.

Materials to create a garden at a home for men transitioning from prison. A toy lending library. Water-saving toilets for a community center. Ladders and brushes for creating murals that reflect our diversity, and paints for a mural on climate change. These are just some of these recent mini-grants for projects that help our community be more self-reliant, environmentally responsible, and inclusive. Dozens of local residents have been enabled to pursue their ideas for making their communities more resilient, more fair, and more connected via grants of $150-$750.

Sustainable Tompkins seeks to build sustainability from the ground up. They aim to have hundreds of people working on re-skilling our populace, rebuilding our democracy, and overcoming inequalities. The mini-grant program helps recruit more people into doing just that.

GreenStar is pleased to be a part of supporting Sustainable Tompkins and their mission here in Tompkins County!
