Each quarter, GreenStar selects three local not-for-profits to be the recipients of our Bring Your Own Bag, Use It for Good program donations. Our BYOB program encourages shoppers to bring their own bags by providing them with a token worth 5¢ that they can donate to one of the chosen organizations. At the end of the quarter, we make a donation to the groups based on the number of tokens given by our customers. This quarter, our recipients are Browncoat Cat Rescue, Loaves and Fishes, and the Youth Farm Project.

Browncoat Cat Rescue is a volunteer run organization that focuses on unwanted and abandoned cats in Ithaca and its surrounding areas.  Volunteers create awareness within the community,  and educate people of the importance of spaying and neutering. By working with committed foster parents, local veterinarians, and members of the community, Browncoat Cat Rescue empowers feral cat colony keepers, and finds loving adoptive homes for rescued cats.

In their own words: “We want to save the world, and we do so one kitty at a time. We allow people to be kind. And this world can use all the kindness she can get!”

One of Browncoat’s main focuses is TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return). They go to places with feral cat populations (barns, residential neighborhoods) and help get them under control. Adult cats are fixed and vaccinated, so they don’t make more unwanted cats and are safe from disease. Browncoat then finds loving foster homes for the social adults and any kittens. All cats and kittens are raised in home environments, so they are loved and well-rounded for when they find their forever families.

100% of all donations to BCR go to the cats! Foster families are provided with nutritious food, litter, and something fun for cats to scratch. All of the fabulous felines receive veterinary care throughout their time in foster care, and will be current on vaccinations and fixed when they go to a permanent home.

GreenStar is pleased to be a part of supporting Browncoat Cat Rescue and their mission here in Tompkins County!
