In Memory of

Sadly, we've lost a member of our GreenStar family. Sandy Knewstub passed away on May 14, 2017. She had been with GreenStar since 2008. As Facilities Manager she oversaw the department that keeps our buildings and grounds running smoothly and looking good. Because of her organization-wide reach, Sandy was well-known and well-liked. She always said what was on her mind,  had a great sense of humor, and took the constant need to attend to all of our "emergencies" in good stride (mostly). Sandy is survived by her husband Ron, and their three sons Zachary, Dylan, and Samuel. Outside of her work time, Sandy loved being at home with her family and friends, and enjoyed cooking, hosting, and taking care of everyone. [...]

GIAC Art Show

Seven years ago, GreenStar started a partnership with the Urban Art Club from the Greater Ithaca Activities Center to create an Earth Day-themed art show for our outdoor eating area. Each year, Jay Stooks works with his Urban Art students to repurpose materials and turn them into art. The mediums have been a mix of handmade stencils, spray-paint, and painting. In the past, they’ve turned an old canvas awning from Purity, church pews, skateboards, and shower doors into art. This year, they're repurposing our West End store's old aisle signs, which were old windows we purchased from Significant Elements. Join us on Friday, April 14 from 4-5 pm for an opening reception under the awning in the outdoor seating [...]

Bring the Family to the 4th Annual Mac ‘N Cheese Bowl

Volunteers from the 2016 Mac 'N Cheese Bowl Saturday, March 18 is the 4th Annual Mac 'N Cheese Bowl, a food-based event that raises money for Foodnet Meals on Wheels of Ithaca. Meals on Wheels provides nutrition services to older adults and people with disabilities in Tompkins County. The proceeds from this year's Mac 'N Cheese Bowl will be used to purchase a new van, ensuring program participants can continue to count on their delivered meals. This will be GreenStar's third year taking part in the Mac 'N Cheese Bowl event -- we enjoy showcasing the talents of our Central Kitchen staff, who always come up with a creative dish. This year we'll be serving a pancetta and spring pea [...]

Meyer Lemons are a Winter Treat!

Meyer Lemons originated in China in the early 1900’s. Thought to be a cross between a regular lemon and a mandarin orange, Meyer Lemons are thin-skinned, smaller, sweeter, and less acidic than a regular lemon. Its aromatic, slightly sweet quality brightens desserts, sauces, salads and roasts. The season is in the winter but they make a great lemonade. Stock up now and store the juice and zest in the freezer for the hot summer months. Here are two great recipes using Meyer lemons. The dip is great for a light lunch paired with carrots, cucumbers, and celery. The pasta sauce is an easy way to make an impression at dinner. Meyer Lemon Veggie Dip zest of 4 Meyer lemons juice of 4 [...]

Finger Lakes Running & Triathlon Co. on the Commons Do you remember the warm weekend we had a few weekends ago? That warm weather got me me quite excited for spending time outside (thank you for the joke, mother nature). One of my favorite outdoor activities is running or walking the Cass Park loop. It is a nice flat loop about 2.5 miles long. A few of us from GreenStar started exercises together last spring to get in shape for the Tough Turtle (more on that later). Running was never my thing, but it started to feel pretty good. The shoes I bought last year are pretty worn out. Luckily the Guide to Being Local book features a [...]

Keep Your Healthy Eating Commitment

Eating heathy is not always easy. Every time we leave our homes there is temptation and encouragement to eat bad quality food. It takes far more effort to make conscious choices than to just run to any store and grab anything you can find. I have identified the three most common situations where clean eating is the most difficult and have addressed some tips that will help you keep your goals. TRAVEL Travel is so tricky. We get off of our regular schedules and finding healthy food can be tough. My biggest tip: travel with a large empty water bottle. You cant take liquids through security, but you can take an empty bottle. Once you go through, find the nearest [...]

From Idea To Business–The first steps to make your business idea a reality.

So many people want to talk to me about starting their own business. I love it. I think it is so fun to get creative and figure out how to make things happen. Ian and I started our company just based on a dream. We literally thought "wow, these macaroons would like so cute in a package!" We had no experience and no idea what we were doing. But we DID it and have learned so much along the way. Here are some easy first steps you can take to turn that dream or idea into a reality: TALK ABOUT IT OUT LOUD: So many times, we get ideas and we are too embarrassed to share them. If you feel [...]
