The third Wednesday of October, which this year is Oct. 16, is designated as International Pronouns Day. GreenStar will recognize and celebrate this event with all-day activities at our three retail stores. Stop by your favorite GreenStar location to pick up some pronoun stickers, literature, and a free pronoun cookie. If you’d like, chat with one of our volunteers at the table.
Are you wondering what International Pronouns Day is all about? Here’s an explanation from the official website: “International Pronouns Day seeks to make respecting, sharing, and educating about personal pronouns commonplace. Referring to people by the pronouns they determine for themselves is basic to human dignity. Being referred to by the wrong pronouns particularly affects transgender and gender nonconforming people. Together, we can transform society to celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities.”
We encourage all who shop, work, and volunteer at, or even deliver to the Co-op to become more aware of the gender identities of people in the GreenStar community, and the importance of addressing them by the pronouns that reflect those gender identities. If you’re addressing a staff person, please use the name that is on their name tag and, if they’re wearing a pronoun button or sticker, use those pronouns. If the words feel unfamiliar and you’re not sure how best to use them, try a little practice! It’s not hard to let go of outdated language that does not recognize individual identities and makes people feel disrespected.
See you on Oct. 16! Ask me about my pronouns, or just call me by my name.
