GreenStar Council News for December 2023

‘Tis the Season!

It is once again the time of year where I remind GreenStar members and shoppers that, as a cooperative business, GreenStar aims to adhere to the triple bottom line of People, Planet, and Profit. I think it is easy for most of us to understand why People and Planet are priorities, but many misunderstand the need for profit in a cooperative enterprise. Profit is often associated with corporate greed or lining the pockets of a few. Many believe that if co-ops focus on profit they will lose sight of their core values; that People and Planet will become secondary and tertiary.

In fact making a profit is a sign that our business is healthy, members are engaged, and the Co-op is doing what it’s supposed to be doing. Generating a profit is, and should be, a part of how we serve our membership, and remain competitive and financially sustainable; ensuring we can continue supporting our community for years to come; ensuring GreenStar remains an alternative economic engine that provides a living wage and generous benefits to employees, as well as millions in revenue to local farmers and producers; ensuring GreenStar continues to serve as an incubator for new businesses – giving them an opportunity to succeed and further bolster our local economy.

When it comes to profit, it is what we DO with those funds that is the cooperative difference. Profits allow us to reinvest in the Co-op, respond to changing market conditions, provide living wage jobs, donate to charities, and support local businesses and initiatives.

Of course GreenStar would not be able to do any of this without the support of the community we serve. Here are some ways to support GreenStar this holiday season and into the new year!

  • Shop the Co-op! Commit yourself to shopping only at the Co-op or as much as possible at GreenStar.
  • Take advantage of our holiday gift card promotion! A wonderful way to introduce someone new to GreenStar or treat someone who already shops the Co-op. For every $100 of gift cards purchased, you will receive an additional $15 dollar gift card.
  • Support the GreenStar Solidarity Fund! The Solidarity Fund builds on the cooperative tradition of mutual aid by allowing individuals to contribute to neighbors and community members on limited incomes, and increasing access to co-op membership and the FLOWER discount for people who are economically marginalized. Individuals can contribute to GreenStar’s Solidarity Fund, an indivisible pool of revolving Co-op equity, to help a fellow community member join and remain a member of the Co-op. Individuals can contribute any amount of equity at the register!
  • Add money to your Easy Pay account! Last year GreenStar launched its new Member Center! The GreenStar Member Center features an account to load money into for easy payment at the register. You can load funds at the register or online. This has the potential to save GreenStar significant credit card fees, especially when members load money into their account with a check or cash at the customer service desk.
