GreenStar has received an outpouring of support and questions about how to immediately assist the Co-op. We also believe this is a critical time to help the many people in need throughout our community. Here’s a way people can support both!

When you shop at any GreenStar location, mention to your cashier that you would like to donate to the Fund for Mutual Aid Tompkins’ Food Sharing Cabinets. With that fund, GreenStar’s staff shoppers will purchase items at GreenStar and add them to our existing donation collection cart at the Cascadilla Street store.

Since October, GreenStar has been supporting the work of Mutual Aid Tompkins by accepting donations of non-perishable food and essential items to stock their Food Sharing Cabinets. You can purchase these donations at GreenStar too and add them to the shopping cart. Please see the suggested list below for winter donations:

These donations are collected regularly by volunteers who distribute the items to area Food Sharing Cabinets.

Mutual Aid Tompkins is a 100% volunteer run organization that was started to ensure that those most vulnerable and affected by COVID-19 get the help they need. Their work helps neighbors share information and resources with one another and helps to match neighbors who need aid with neighbors able to support — especially supporting access to groceries, medicine, and supplies.

They have worked directly with community members to set up Food Sharing Cabinets across Tompkins County. You can find a map of the current locations here. Any community member is welcome to take and leave food and other essential items at cabinets. Cabinets are open for use 24/7. If you would like to request a cabinet for your area, please contact Mutual Aid Tompkins directly by email at foodsharing@mutualaidtompkins.com.
