GreenStar Food Co-op Extends 13% Discount, Affordable Access for Those with Financial Needs

Discount Extended to Those who are Facing Unemployment

GreenStar Food Co+op is expanding the eligibility criteria for our FLOWER food access discount program to include people who are receiving unemployment benefits or who have recently been laid off from employment. The qualifier is a temporary addition, allowing community members to sign-up from June 22 through the end of November 2020 for a one-year 13% discount and a free one-year membership for new co-op members.

Those who are currently receiving assistance from one of the following programs are also eligible:

  • SNAP (Food Stamps)
  • Unemployment
  • Medicaid
  • WIC
  • SSI
  • Free School Lunch Program
  • TANF – Cash Assistance
  • Healthy Food for All
  • Pell Grant

Current GreenStar members and new customers may complete an application available online here, at GreenStar’s new store at 770 Cascadilla St., or our Collegetown location at 307 College Ave. To qualify, applicants must submit their application in-store and show identification and valid documentation of benefit enrollment or an official letter from an employer verifying unemployment status. Upon approval, the discount may be used immediately.

“We are committed to supporting our community to access and afford food that is fresh, local, and organic. Because of GreenStar’s expansion and relocation we are now able to expand our product line to include more of the grocery, prepared food, and household items that people are looking for,” GreenStar’s General Manager, Brandon Kane said. “Our area is experiencing a more than 10 percent unemployment rate, and we want to help by extending the FLOWER program to more people in our community. With our everyday low-price Co+op Basics items and regular Co+op Deals, more families and budget-shoppers are finding ways to save at their local co-op.”

The FLOWER discount now extends to products formerly excluded including sushi, dairy, milk, butter, eggs, and non-refrigerated bread. The discount will not apply to products within the Co+op Basics line, products that are a Co+op Deal, or Flash Sale items.

Those who are approved for FLOWER and have never been a GreenStar Co-op Member-Owner will receive a free one-year trial membership. Current GreenStar members applying for FLOWER must have a current membership to participate in the program. FLOWER participants must reapply each year after the first year of membership and show up-to-date verification of benefits enrollment to continue in the program.

Individuals, service agencies, and nonprofit organizations may reach out to for more information about FLOWER and outreach materials to help share information with those who may benefit from the discount program.

This year is GreenStar’s 10th year offering the FLOWER program, which has served about 2,000 individuals and families in our community facing financial hardship. The success distinguishes GreenStar as a leader in healthy food access as we are continually consulted by other co-ops wanting to launch similar programs or improve existing programs.
