Each quarter, GreenStar selects three local not-for-profits to be the recipients of our Bring Your Own Bag, Use It for Good program donations. Our BYOB program encourages shoppers to bring their own bags by providing them with a token worth 5¢ that they can donate to one of the chosen organizations. At the end of the quarter, we make a donation to the groups based on the number of tokens given by our customers. This quarter, our recipients are Get Your GreenBack Tompkins, the SPCA of Tompkins County, and the Sophie Fund.

This week, we’d like to tell you a little more about Get Your GreenBack Tompkins. Get Your GreenBack Tompkins is a community-initiated and community-supported campaign that works collaboratively to help people and organizations take key steps in the areas of food, transportation, waste, and building energy that simultaneously reduce our community’s carbon emissions, save money, and create a socially just local economy.

Get Your GreenBack Tompkins seeks to help people and organizations answer the question, “What practical things can we do in our daily lives to protect our living environment, save money, and contribute to good jobs for people in our community?” They’ve come up with a set of research-based steps in the areas of local food, building energy, waste reduction and transportation. In 2014, community members collectively took over 42,000 of those energy- and money-saving steps! Get Your GreenBack Tompkins also helps community members take higher-impact actions by offering personalized energy advice and promoting collaborative solutions with local businesses, non-profits, and residents.

GreenStar is pleased to be a part of supporting Get Your GreenBack Tompkins and their mission here in Tompkins County!
