Starting today, March 31, GreenStar will be giving out free reusable shopping bags thru the month of April. Bringing your own bag is good for the planet and, through our Bring Your Own Bag, Use It for Good program, it’s good for local charities.

Implemented in 2014, the BYOB initiative encourages GreenStar shoppers to bring reusable bags. When you do, you receive a token that represents a 5-cent donation made by the Co-op to a rotating selection of local non-profits. Three organizations are selected per quarter — the current selections, for April through June, are Ithaca Welcomes Refugees, Cayuga Waterfront Trail,  and Wildkind Care Wildlife Rehabilitation.  In 2016, donations from this program totaled $4,201. We’ve raised over $10,000 since the initiative began and saved 230,000 bags from the landfill.

When shopping at any of our three stores over the month of April, don’t forget to grab your free bag!

Thank you to everyone who brings their own bag!
