Keep Your Healthy Eating Commitment

Eating heathy is not always easy. Every time we leave our homes there is temptation and encouragement to eat bad quality food. It takes far more effort to make conscious choices than to just run to any store and grab anything you can find. I have identified the three most common situations where clean eating is the most difficult and have addressed some tips that will help you keep your goals.

TRAVEL

Travel is so tricky. We get off of our regular schedules and finding healthy food can be tough. My biggest tip: travel with a large empty water bottle. You cant take liquids through security, but you can take an empty bottle. Once you go through, find the nearest water fountain and fill up. I personally hate plastic water bottles and worst of all, they are all too small! Flying dehydrates our bodies and if we don’t get enough water, we will be much more tempted to eat bad food. Also, the two cups of water that you get on a flight is not even close to enough!! Try to drink at least an entire large bottle of water during your trip–more if you can. Also, food. Food in airports is usually pretty gross (although Emmy’s Organics macaroons are available in many US airports!), if you don’t plan ahead, you are forced to eat something that you don’t want to. The night before your flight, get a healthy snack together. Many of the bagged snacks in the bulk section are perfect for travel or take a few pieces of fruit. If you eat eggs, my favorite is to bring 2-3 hardboiled eggs with me. Put them in a zip lock bag that you can peel them into when you are ready to eat. They are filling and easy to travel with.

DINNER WITH FRIENDS

Going to someone else’s house for dinner who doesn’t follow the same diet as you is hard. It is so easy to feel guilty for not eating what they prepare for you. My favorite tip: offer to bring an appetizer and side dish. Bring some fresh vegetables and hummus and a hearty salad. When you serve yourself at dinner, take some salad first. Make that the bulk of your plate before taking the other dishes. You will feel better knowing that your meal was mostly vegetables. Also, if the weather is nice, suggest a walk after dinner with the group, this will allow you to burn off some of the food that you wouldn’t have eaten otherwise.

LUNCH AT WORK

When you are busy working on numerous projects, the last thing you want to do is to figure out what to eat thats healthy. My plan? SALAD! People have this idea that salads take time to make. I strongly disagree. At the beginning of the week, buy a large container of pre-washed salad greens. Then pick a few toppings that will last you throughout the week. I love seaweed, seasoned nuts, avocado and some kind of protein (cubed tofu, hardboiled egg, leftovers from dinner the night before). If you keep this handy to take to work or even leave in your office refrigerator, you will never need to go buy a lunch that is less quality. Will you eat the same thing all week? Yes. Will you be able to keep your energy and nutrition levels up all day? Yes.
