Foodnet Meals on Wheels – Nourishment for Our Older Neighbors in Need

When Tompkins County residents age 60 and older have trouble shopping or cooking – whether long-term or short-term, like when recuperating from an illness or surgery – they turn to Foodnet Meals on Wheels, the county’s only local organization that cooks and delivers hot meals directly to clients.

These fresh-cooked, home-delivered meals are part of the Tompkins County Office for the Aging (COFA) Senior Nutrition Program, which Foodnet Meals on Wheels operates as a contractor. The home-delivered meals provide delicious, nutritious food, along with a wellness check by our big-hearted outreach drivers.

The Senior Nutrition Program also includes Community Dining for older adults who are able to shop and cook for themselves, but prefer to eat lunch with company. By providing hot, delicious, and nutritious meals in a community space, the Community Dining program allows our older neighbors to enjoy a meal and socialize with others, which could help alleviate some of the negative impacts of loneliness – such as depression, cognitive decline, and cardiovascular disease.

Foodnet Meals on Wheels currently operates Community Dining at three locations in Tompkins County: Titus Towers in Ithaca every weekday; Slaterville Volunteer Fire Company in Slaterville Springs on Tuesdays; and The Shops at Ithaca Mall in Lansing on Thursdays.

Each Foodnet Meals on Wheels meal is planned by a Registered Dietician to provide at least one-third of the nutritional needs of an older adult, at least 650 calories, less than 800mg of sodium, and includes milk. Our Registered Dietician also provides regular nutrition education and individualized nutrition counseling for clients.

The Senior Nutrition program is sponsored by The US Department of Health and Human Services – Administration on Community Living (ACL), New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA), and Tompkins County Office for the Aging (COFA).

We are deeply grateful to GreenStar Food Co+op for choosing Foodnet Meals on Wheels as a Partner for Change. GreenStar’s commitment to supporting the Tompkins County community will help our older neighbors to age in place, enabling them to maintain their independence and dignity in the comfort of their own homes for as long as possible.
