Our new coffee and espresso bar will offer espresso drinks as well as blended mochas, lattes, and more, with a great selection of self-serve coffees on offer as well, and a new smoothie menu. Meet Jacob, our new Cafe Manager.
What is your coffee background?
I started drinking coffee when I was about 5 years old and had a favorite (Hills Bros.) by 6. At 17 I was drinking up to 3 pots a day. I got my first barista job in 1994 at a Gloria Jeans Coffee Bean in a mall in the San Francisco suburbs. After that, I worked at two different Starbucks locations in San Francisco. I left coffee to play music and travel for a few years. Fast forward to 2008, I got another barista gig at Gimme! Coffee at the State St. location with the intention of becoming a roaster, which happened in the following two years. After 10 years with Gimme Coffee, I left my position of Head Roaster and started a coffee company called Oak and Crow.
What are you most excited about with the new cafe?
I’m excited to not only bring delicious coffee to another neighborhood in Ithaca, but also to offer things that other cafes aren’t able to. The advantage of having a cafe inside a natural foods store is that there are many ingredients to pull from to create new and interesting beverages, and I can collaborate with other departments.
What would you say to a coffee aficionado about our cafe offerings?
Well, we’re going to have a little bit of everything. For the purists, there will be the standard third-wave coffee selection: espresso, cappuccino, americano, etc. For folks looking for something a bit different, we’ll have blended frozen mochas, chai lattes, and nitro cold-brew coffee.
What can you tell us about smoothies?
This is new for GreenStar. We’ll have a selection of about 7 smoothies to start with and a handful of add-ons that include proteins (vegan and dairy), chia, etc. The flavor selection will have something for everyone.
