Red Gate Grocer fresh Thanksgiving turkeys will be available in GreenStar’s West End store beginning Nov. 14. These natural, pasture-raised birds are supplied by Kendaia Natural Growers, Daniel King’s family farm located in Ovid, NY. The King family farm and Red Gate Grocer partnership was established in 2017 with the inception of Red Gate Grocer and their mission to provide locally and humanely raised products. A project of local distributor Regional Access, Red Gate seeks to support small family-run farms and businesses within the Central New York and Northern Pennsylvania regions.
As a local dairy farmer, Daniel King hoped to secure the family farm’s future and meet the local community’s needs by transitioning his family’s farmland to organic practices and adding poultry to his farm’s products. When he reached out to Regional Access for support during this transition, his commitment to quality and sustainable farming was obvious and solidified the partnership. The King family’s farm began supplying pastured chicken for Red Gate Grocer in 2017, and found loyal support from chefs and consumers alike. Today, Red Gate is proud to offer their turkeys as well — pasture-raised with integrity in the heart of the Finger Lakes. Reared outdoors, with free access to grass, fresh air, and plenty of space to run, the birds are raised on vegetarian feed with no antibiotics or growth hormones. Though the farm has not yet completed organic certification, the birds are raised using organic practices.
Red Gate was begun in order to bring high-quality products from area family farms like Daniel’s to local shoppers, while allowing those farms access to a greater market and more economic stability. Inspired by the legacy of the late Gary Redmond, founder of Regional Access, Red Gate seeks out family farms throughout Central New York and Northern Pennsylvania that focus on quality over quantity, using environment- and animal-friendly farming practices. Currently working with nine area farms, Red Gate also supplies ground beef and bulk eggs to the West End, and ground beef and eggs in cartons to DeWitt.
