We’ve Adopted the Waterfront Trail — Join Us for a Trail Clean-up!

While it’s possible to visit GreenStar’s West End store without being aware of its proximity to Ithaca’s waterfront, both the store and our warehouse building lie nearly on the water, and we are lucky to be neighbors to the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. In support of our commitment to the environment and our community, the Co-op is adopting the “West End Trail” section of the Cayuga Waterfront Trail. The adoption will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting (Thursday, April 13 at noon, on the trail behind our warehouse building) and will kick off with a community clean-up held on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22.
The Cayuga Waterfront Trail is a 5.5-mile, multi-use trail running along Ithaca’s Cayuga Lake waterfront and connecting the city’s most popular waterfront destinations — Cass Park, the Ithaca Farmers Market, and Stewart Park. Designed for use by walkers, joggers, bicyclists, inline skaters, mobility-impaired users, and parents with strollers, the trail opened its first section in 2002 and later expanded to its present length, which encompasses benches, scenic overlooks, native plantings, and interpretive signs.
Running from the Buffalo Street trail pedestrian bridge to the Ithaca College boathouse, the adopted “West End Trail” section passes directly behind GreenStar’s building that houses the Co-op’s Central Kitchen, admin offices, and The Space @ GreenStar. As trail adopters, the Co-op will be responsible for keeping the trail safe and attractive — removing trash, trimming any encroaching brush and vegetation, and removing autumn leaves, twigs, or other debris that make the trail difficult to use. Everyone is invited to the Waterfront Trail “Spring Cleaning” to kick off the adoption on Earth Day, April 22, from 10 am to 1 pm. Part of a trail-wide effort co-sponsored by GreenStar, the Friends of Stewart Park, and the Cayuga Waterfront Trail itself, the clean-up offers a fun, communal way to spruce up the trail for spring. Stop by The Space @ GreenStar at any time between 10 and 1 to sign in, grab some snacks, and enter to win a special Earth Day raffle.
